Historic Center

Rimini’s historic center is characterized by important monuments such as the Tiberius Bridge and the Arch of Augustus, fundamental testimonies of the Roman era that symbolize the city’s history.
Of great importance and interest is the Malatesta Temple, built during the Renaissance by Leon Battista Alberti, and Castel Sigismondo, a majestic fortress commissioned by Sigismondo, lord of Rimini, with imposing towers rising like pyramids from the surrounding moat.

Three squares represent important cultural centers and meeting places in the heart of the city: Piazza Cavour, surrounded by historic buildings, the majestic Teatro Galli, and the famous Vecchia Pescheria with its lively nightlife venues, with the suggestive Fountain of the Pinecone in the center, Piazza Tre Martiri, which commemorates the sacrifice of three Rimini partisans during the Second World War; finally, Piazza Ferrari, a destination for visitors from all over the world for the latest archaeological discovery, the Domus of the Surgeon.

The Hinterland

Rimini’s hinterland offers a landscape steeped in Malatesta history, which gives the curious traveler a series of enchanting panoramas.
Among castles, fortified villages, millennia-old churches, and expanses of olive groves and vineyards, the hinterland reveals a rich history, vibrant flavors, and a unique palette of colors.

These beauties can be explored through numerous excursions, and among the noteworthy destinations are places like: Gradara, San Leo, Santarcangelo di Romagna, Montebello, Montefiore, and Mondaino.

Republic of San Marino

The Republic of San Marino is located between Rimini and the province of Pesaro-Urbino. Its border with Italy extends for almost 40 km.

Rich in medieval history, the enclave is famous for its three Towers: Guaita, Cesta (or Fratta), and Montale Tower.
The Guaita and Cesta Towers are open to the public and can be visited.

The Sammarinese territory is predominantly hilly, which gives it the characteristic charm often portrayed in photos of the area.
Mount Titano, rising to 749 meters above sea level, dominates the entire Republic, representing the highest point in the country and also marks the beginning of the Tuscan-Romagnolo Apennines, from which several streams originate, such as the Marano and Marecchia, which flow towards the Adriatic Sea.

San Marino is only 10 km as the crow flies from the sea.

Ravenna

Ravenna is a renowned city of Byzantine art and culture, famous for its sumptuous mosaics, monuments, and churches known worldwide. It is about an hour’s drive from Rimini and is easily accessible by car or train.

Onferno Caves

The Oriented Nature Reserve of Onferno is located in the province of Rimini, embraced by the serene hills of the Valconca hinterland, bordering Montefeltro, offering a panoramic view of the Adriatic Sea and the Republic of San Marino. This place is an oasis of tranquility and total immersion in nature, providing a feeling of serenity and well-being.

The karst complex of the Onferno Caves, famous since the 19th century, is considered one of the most significant in Italy among the caves found in gypsum. The cave extends along the underground course of the river, located at the base of a large and unique block of gypsum where the “Castrum Inferni” once stood.

Onferno or Inferno? The former is the current name, given to the town in 1810 by the Bishop of Rimini, who preferred to avoid a name that directly evoked the idea of demons and hell in his territory. The latter is the ancient name (derived from Latin “infernum,” meaning low and dark place) used by the local inhabitants, who believed that the entrance to the cave was the gateway to hell. It was a wild place, with gullies, forests, and “smokes” that came out of sinkholes in winter: the local population was certain they were in a “diabolical” environment.
